10 Tips for Diabetics Eating Out

Last night I went out for dinner with some friends. While I tried to be health conscious and ordered a healthy salad with grilled chicken and creamy avocado, one of my friends ordered the most greasy thing on the menu with a side of fries. Some friends poked fun at my salad, but I didn’t mind.

Luckily, none of my friends are diabetics; it may be that we’re all young. But, that got me thinking do people who are diabetic know what to order or not to order while dining out with friends?

Going out to eat with friends and family is always a great experience. So, I thought, why not write some tips for people with diabetes who enjoy this activity as well. Without further ado, here are some thoughts:

  1. Avoid fried and breaded foods.
  2. Be careful with table d’hôte menus: generous desserts are often included.
  3. Choose the “catch of the day” or order from the “light” menu offered by many restaurants.
  4. Start with vegetable soup or juice, or salad, instead of emptying the bread basket.
  5. Ask for dressings and sauces “on the side” and use them sparingly, if at all. Avoid creamy sauces and dressings.
  6. Ask to substitute starchy foods, such as fries, with vegetables. Some restaurants will replace fries with a soup salad.
  7. Order a half-portion of pasta (without a cream sauce) or share your serving.
  8. Drink plenty of water. It’s free!
  9. If you are still hungry after your main course, order fruit salad or milk based dessert.
  10. Don’t feel compelled to clean your plate. You’ll get most for your money — and look great in your clothes — by taking leftovers home.

So, go out. Have fun. However, be mindful of what you are eating, and how much you eat, it could be a life and death decision.
