5 Refreshing Diabetes-Friendly Drinks for the Summer

Summer is here, and the sun is out. There is nothing quite like enjoying a fresh picnic outdoors in that beautiful summer sun.

The problem?

These picnics are usually full of sugary drinks that are likely to send you into a diabetic shock. Instead of banishing yourself to water at the next picnic, try one of these recipes, instead:

#1 Strawberry Lemonade

Suggested serving.

If you haven’t tried combining strawberry and lemon yet, then you are in for a treat. This recipe calls for agave as a sweetener, but consider using raw honey, instead. Agave is pure sugar with little health benefit whereas raw honey offers lots of vitamins and minerals to boost your immune system.

#2 Chia Fresca Natural Energy Drink

Suggested serving.

Chia seeds are little nutrition powerhouses that are packed with healthy fats, loads of fiber, and protein. When you put them in water, they become gelatinous. Sip on this natural energy drink to boost your brain and heart without making a dent in your blood glucose.

#3 Cilantro Jalapeno Limeade

Suggested serving.

This may sound a little strange, but give it a try. Cilantro and jalapeno are surprisingly refreshing in liquid form! Plus, the extra spice in the jalapeno will speed up your metabolism ever so slightly so that you will actually be burning your food more efficiently than your friends who are sipping on sugar-laden drinks.

#4 Pineapple Peppermint Love

Suggested serving.

This juice is for those who are looking for something a bit sweeter. The sugar content is a bit higher than the other drinks, so sip with caution. The benefits may be worth it, though. This drink is like taking a vitamin C shot along with superior hydration. At the very least, it is super refreshing.

#5 Sparkling Lime Mint Quencher

Suggested serving.

This simple recipe is a great classic to have on hand. The sparkling water gives it a little pizazz and the lime and mint offer the refreshing component you’re craving. The recipe calls for maple syrup, which I’m a huge fan of, even nutritionally-speaking. If you’re not comfortable with maple syrup, though, try raw honey instead. Raw honey is full of vitamins and minerals, and it digests a bit slower than most other sweeteners.
