Best Essential Oils for Diabetic Nerve Pain

You know the feeling: numbness, tingling and sometimes burning. Diabetic nerve pain is caused by nerve damage, which is, unfortunately, a much bigger issue than what essential oils can handle. That doesn’t mean that you can’t treat the symptoms, though.

When nerve damage occurs, infection is a huge risk for the affected area. The area can become incredibly painful as blood flow decreases, inflammation sets in, and minor cuts and scrapes turn into serious issues.

The best way to topically treat the nerve pain is to support the body against infection, pain, and swelling. These three essential oils will help you combat your diabetic nerve pain:

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil has a sweet, nostalgic aroma. It is notorious for having calming effects by reducing stress and anxiety. It is also a serious pain reliever. In one study, post-biopsy patients were given lavender-infused oxygen or regular oxygen. Those who inhaled the lavender oxygen reported less pain than those with the regular oxygen.

Lavender essential oil also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great oil for pain-related to swelling. The anti-bacterial properties also promote wound healing.

Add a few drops to a diffuser and breathe in the amazing aroma. It will help reduce the pain and alleviate stress. You can also add a few drops to a carrier oil, like coconut oil, and rub it on the affected areas for a bit of relaxation and inflammation-reducing, as well.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil has strong anti-inflammatory properties and offers pain relief as a result. It is also incredibly helpful with wound healing and treating infections. In fact, it is often used to treat diabetes-related foot infections due to its powerful antimicrobial and cell-proliferation activity. Not only does it promote cellular rejuvenation, but it also stimulates the immune system to combat foreign threats.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint essential oil is best known for its cooling sensation. When applied topically, it increases blood flow to the skin as the aroma cools its surface. This increased blood flow will help clean out stagnant blood from the affected area, which will lend a hand in the healing process and reduce swelling.

Add a few drops to a tablespoon of carrier oil, such as coconut oil. Rub gently on affected area.
