#1 – It was a Greek physician who coined the term diabetes.

Long before this medical condition was given a name, ancient physicians already knew of the disease’s symptoms, which are frequent urination, increased thirst, and increased hunger with weight loss.

A Greek physician who lived between 30 – 90 CE was given the credit of naming the disease based on its common symptoms. According to his observations, the patients experience increased thirst, urination and hunger and have weight loss problems; hence, he named the disease diabetes, which means a “flowing through.”

#2 – During the ancient times, testing for diabetes involved literally tasting urine.

It may sound disgusting, but during the ancient times, one way of checking for diabetes was tasting the urine sample. People called “water tasters” had the unpleasant task of literally tasting the patient’s urine sample to see if it tasted sweet. Urine that tasted sweet is positive for diabetes.

There were other methods for checking diabetes, of course, and these methods were not as unpleasant as the first one. If the urine sample attracted pests like ants and flies, then it is indicative of diabetes.

#3 – Diabetes was once treated with increased sugar intake.

We now know that we need to decrease our sugar intake to control our blood sugar level, but during the 1850s, diabetes was once treated with higher sugar intake. This method was advised by Priory, a French physician, to his patients. Unfortunately, his method only worsened his patients’ conditions, and fortunately, this way of treating diabetes did not last long.
