How do you recognize signs of a diabetic coma in the making? Think of Indiana Jones and that big boulder rolling down on him. Only when you know what’s coming at you will you have a chance to get out of the way.
The first sign that something is wrong might be subtle, or it might be obvious. But don’t ignore it. Don’t run off half-cocked. And while you’re looking around for the big rock, tell someone. Call someone. Make sure someone knows, just in case you pass out. Indie would have.
Possible Signs of a Diabetic Coma
You’re vulnerable to a diabetic coma from either high or low blood sugar. It helps to be familiar with how they each feel to you specifically. But in general:
4 Signs Due to Hypoglycemia
- Shaky, anxious, nervous, weak, dizzy, light-headed, sweating
- Exhausted
- Very hungry, or nauseated
- Confused, having difficulty communicating
4 Signs Due to Hyperglycemia
- Very thirsty, with dry mouth, increased urination
- Rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, exhausted
- Fruity breath
- Stomach pain, nauseated, vomiting
Hypoglycemia Unawareness
Hypoglycemia unawareness is a condition in which the normal signs of hypoglycemia don’t appear. That means no warning, no signs of a diabetic coma even if it’s coming- no rumbling from the back of the cave. There can be signs of hypoglycemia unawareness, but it’s the people around you who’ll notice them.
Signs of Hypoglycemia Unawareness
- Irrational thought, inappropriate laughing, silliness
- Anger, irritability, high stress, high emotions
- Running away (ironically)
- Insisting you’re alright even when you’re acting strangely
If you hear from others that you’ve been exhibiting these symptoms, run like heck to the doctor. Because it means you won’t be aware when your blood sugar gets to dangerously low levels, or when you’re not thinking clearly. With medical help, it usually goes away.
