Are you feeling a little lost when it comes to creating your diabetes management plan? Are you sure you’re doing everything needed to maintain good health? Well, everyone could use a little help with their to-dos, especially when it comes to health. Here is a quick checklist of healthy things diabetics should do every day to help you stay on track.
#1 Check Your Morning Blood Sugar
The first thing you should do is test your blood glucose levels. It will show where you are at the beginning of the day, give an idea of what to eat, and what amount of insulin to take (if any). Your morning numbers will also indicate how stable your blood glucose levels were overnight.
#2 Check Your Feet
Examine your feet to see if any injuries or sore spots have developed during the day. If they have, you’ll want to take steps to prevent the wounds from getting worse. Keep an eye out for blisters, redness, swelling, bruises, cuts, or scrapes.
#3 Eat a Healthy Breakfast
You’ll want to start the day off right! Try a protein-packed breakfast with a side of complex carbs and veggies. Carbs and protein provide energy throughout the day, while vegetables contain fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
#4 Take Your Medications
Remember to take your medications as prescribed throughout the day. If you are prone to forgetting, keep your meds in a visible location, like the dining room table. You may also want to invest in a pill organizer, which shows whether you’ve taken all of your medication each day.
#5 Brush and Floss Your Teeth
Diabetes can throw off the balance of healthy bacteria in your mouth and make you more prone to gum disease and cavities. Try to stay on top of your dental health by brushing after meals and floss your gums daily.
#6 Grab a Snack
Pick up a carbohydrate snack to eat between meals during the day or when you have a drop in blood sugar levels. It’s always a good idea to carry something to eat wherever you go or else keep it in the car. It can be something with simple sugars, such as gummy bears or a juice box. In fact, sugar is better for countering hypoglycemia.
#7 Get Enough Sleep
Research has shown that sleep is important for appetite and blood sugar control. You should be aiming for between seven to nine hours each night.
