Diabetes certainly brings about a long list of daily obstacles that make a living with diabetes an odious task. Monitoring glucose levels makes mathematicians out of ordinary diabetics, and insulin injections foster utmost discretion.
Well, one designer grew sick of it and took matters into her own hands. She designed clothing that wouldn’t get in the way of a diabetes diagnosis.
Fashionable Clothing for Diabetes
Aptly named, Type 1 Clothing is a brand of clothing specifically designed for diabetics. The creator and designer, Natalie India Balmain, has type 1 diabetes and knows the daily struggle this diagnosis comes with.
Balmain came up with the idea when the current fashion trends made it nearly impossible to administer insulin without stripping down.
Jumpsuits, rompers, and overalls have all made it incredibly difficult to discreetly inject insulin. Rather than lifting a shirt or a pair of shorts, she would have to head to the bathroom to essentially disrobe.
Instead of missing out on those epic fashion trends, she decided to create her own clothing line that made it all possible.
The clothing line provides easier access to their bodies for injections along with simple carrying options for their insulin pumps. Rather than having clothing centered on functionality, it is of high-fashion design and comfortable.
And no surprise at all, the diabetes community welcomes this clothing line with open arms.
So, what’s next?
Balmain says that she started with the women’s clothing because it’s what she knows best. She knew how to make fashionable clothing for women and that the demand already existed.
But now, she is starting to think about a children’s line to make this complex lifestyle a little bit more manageable for kiddos and their parents.
