Hypoglycemia occurs when the blood glucose level drops below normal. It’s common diabetics, and it’s important to know what to do during an episode. Do you know what to do? Below are four steps you should take.
1 Check your blood glucose immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Shakiness
- Weakness or fatigue
- Sweating
- Hunger or nausea
- Rapid heartbeat
- Dizziness
- Anxiety, irritability, or anger
- Blurred vision
- Trouble concentrating, impaired judgment, or confusion
2 If your blood glucose is under 4 mmol/L, consume one of the following sources of sugar immediately:
- Glucose tablets (as per the instructions on the packaging)
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 3/4 cup of fruit drink, fruit juice, or regular soda
- 1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup
3 Wait 15 minutes and then test your blood glucose again. If it’s still under 4 mmol/L, repeat step 2.
4 If your blood glucose is equal to or higher than 4 mmol/L, and your next meal is more than an hour away, eat a small snack that includes carbohydrates and proteins. For instance, 7 soda crackers with 1 oz of cheese.
